Favorite Fictional Pets

Posted by on August 2, 2013

Happy Friday yall! The Pet Lover Photo contest and giveaway has begun! And we are already receiving submissions. How cool is that?! Check out y’all’s board on Pinterest!

So pets. They have been such a mainstay in fiction throughout the years. From Argos in The Odyssey to Hagrid’s Fluffy in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Our childhood is filled with pet stories. Who can forget Old Yeller? Or The Black Stallion? Where the Red Fern Grows? Who didn’t cry at the end of that book? Just check out the list for dog stories on Wikipedia. Interesting to note, the cat list was a lot shorter. I think we need to remedy that. 🙂

white fangSo, what is it about animals that they feature such prominence in our literature? I don’t know about y’all, but I envy the special connection people have with their pets. I wanted to be Sheena when I was a kid and talk to all the animals. Believe me, I tried. Didn’t work. Yeah, I was probably too young to be watching that movie, but that’s another topic for another post. 😉 Did you know my first cat was named Sheena?

I think it’s about companionship and unconditional love. Our pets love us no matter what. Good day, bad day. They are a forever friend, not a fair-weather friend. Who wouldn’t want to see stories about that?

So what say you? What is it about animals you love? What is your favorite pet story?

Well, just like we can’t limit our favorite books to just one, I think we can allow several favorite animals. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I love animals in fiction. They seem to bring out the humanity in people, like Because of Winn-Dixie,, the dog that brings the town together. Or The Yearling, or Goodbye My Lady, while we’re on the subject of tear-jerkers. Or the Bond villain stroking a cat while he orders peoples’ deaths, contrasting humanity with inhumanity. That’s why it’s so devastating when the pet dies–that part of you dies with them. I had a story once where a suicidal character is returned from the brink by the adoption of a pet. He learns to care about something other than himself and it pulls him out of the darkness.

I like reptiles, especially lizards. Snakes don’t have eyelids and don’t have as much expression. Chickens are nice, too, because they earn their keep. I think, of the kinds of pet lizards, bearded dragons are king. I’d love to have a beardy someday.

Hey Kessie! I like how you put that. The contrasting of humanity & inhumanity. That is interesting that animals would bring out the humanity in people, hadn’t thought about it before like that. Lizards are nice to look at, especially the bearded dragon. I held a snake once and it was really…comforting how it wrapped around my arm. Weird! Would never have thought that before. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

Animals are an incredible gift from God! What would we do without our pets? My favorite animal has to be the horse, but there are so many other wonderful creatures as well!

Hi Hannah! Thanks for stopping by! I love the horse too. Thank the Black Stallion series for that. Ha!

I love cats! My favorite book is a children’s book called “Cookie’s Week.” I used to read it to my son all the time. For an adult book I would say “Dewey The Small Town Library Cat and also Marley.” Cried like a baby on both. When I was a child I love “Lassie.” Well I still do but; cannot watch those shows as they get me every time and I cry. LOL.
