Review: Reaper’s Rhythm

Posted by on July 30, 2013

We’re celebrating indie books with the I Love Indie Books Blog Hop. If you haven’t checked that out, the giveaway ends tonight at 11:59. And speaking of indie, Clare Davidson launches her second novel, Reaper’s Rhythm. Tight writing, well-fleshed out characters, this author has it going on. That is why today, I am excited to be part of the Reaper’s Rhythm Blog Tour.

Wow. What an adventure. I’d say Clare Davidson’s second novel is a contemporary paranormal thriller, but that could translate into urban fantasy.

First. I am not a fan of present tense books, so when I started reading, I groaned. I was like nooooo, but the author handled it well, and I hardly noticed it as I was swept along into the story.

Second. Although the protagonist is 16, the book handles hard issues that many teens face such as suicide, sex, divorce and dealing with grief, so parents might want to preview it first. Here again, I think she handled it well while keeping it real.

Now for the story. Kim Welles finds her older sister dead, wrists slashed. She freaks out, runs to get help, trips down the stairs and slams into a man. He touches her forehead, tells her to sleep, forget. The next thing Kim knows she is waking up in the hospital and doesn’t remember any of it. When her parents tell her that her sister committed suicide, she refuses to believe her happy-go-lucky sister would do such a thing, and Kim is determined to find out who killed her and why. As Kim unravels the mystery, the story speeds up and the tension builds, and we are in for one wild ride.

The characters felt real and kept you guessing whose side they were really on. The paranormal characters seemed like angels to me, but with different names & their own history. Although, I don’t like to read books about angels, fallen angels, I liked how she explained their existence, giving us a feel of living an alternative reality, helping us to suspend disbelief rather than trying to apply our reality to the book’s story.

It was a good, thought-provoking read, and I’m curious to see what is next in this series.
