Sights & Sounds of the Season

Posted by on December 23, 2013

Being from Minnesota, the “sights” of Christmas include snow, but in Texas we do without. I find it interesting how a “white Christmas” perpetuates holiday celebrations here in the US. Even more interesting the blow up snowmen on green lawns. But the sounds? That carries us anywhere and everywhere. I can have Christmas without the snow, but not without the music. My favorites have been songs from my childhood and more recently, Transiberian Orchestra. Love their stuff! Well, this year I’ve discovered a new one. Pentatonix.

First off, y’all need to know that I am not a big fan of a cappella. I’ll make exceptions like the Zambian Vocal Group where my hubby used to sing. When I first heard about Pentatonix, everyone was posting the video on Facebook, and I refused to watch it. I am reluctant to jump on bandwagons and what not. That is until my mom texted me asking if my hubby had a twin brother. What?! So of course I had to watch it then. Ha! Even our little girl asks if that is daddy. Um, no, unless he’s been living a double life. The funny thing is, she has never seen her daddy perform before, and she has no idea how close she is.

Last week, the stomach bug hit our family and lingered on into the weekend. Blah. But one of the most precious times about sickness is all the extra cuddling with the kiddos. And I am milking it for all its worth. So the kiddos and I are curled up on the couch, and I asked my son if he wanted to watch a movie. No. His request? Pentatonix Little Drummer Boy.  Over and over. And the sweetest thing was my little three year old singing along even though being so sick. They LOVE this group and have since explored their other songs.

So in the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle, we have been forced to stop, breathe and just be. And I am loving it! Minus the sickness. We are looking forward to a quiet, and hopefully non-sick, Christmas here.

So what are the “sights & sounds” for you this holiday season? Have you heard of Pentatonix before? What is your favorite group or song for Christmas?

I saw that video when it first started going around youtube. Hubby & I loved it and explored their other songs but didn’t end up liking anything else that we clicked on. But it is an absolutely beautiful rendition of Drummer Boy! Did you see the other video going around of The Piano Guys? 4 guys playing a piano together, using the keys, a bow & the piano strings and tapping the side? It’s something else!

I hope everyone is starting to feel better. And that you have a blessed Christmas!
